Chief interest is in the Democratic convention in Chicago where speeches were made Tues dft&by ministers Anderson to Den Mesta to Luxembourg, Mrs. India Edwards, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. Vice President Bark ley, who withdrew from the race, and Senator Russell of Georgia and Governor Stevenson of Illin ois are cousins, says Eugene Tur ner. No wonder there’s a big “family fight” in the convention. Tf Stevenson and Russell become the candidates it will probably be the first time two cousins were on the ticket at the same time .... Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lawrence are attending the Craftsman Show in Asheville where they have a weaving exhibit. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Barnard of Winston-Salem are guests of Mrs. D. C. Brundage. DOG NEWS “The Complete Pekingese” by Milo G. Denlinger is an interest ing book on the history and de velopment of the Pekingese dog, its training and general care, etc., and news about Various dogs, own ers, judges and trainers. One paragraph comments about Mrs. Herbert Mfipes of Tryon, (formerly of New Jersey) “whose husband is one of our noted judges, has been breeding Pekingese for about 25 years. Her kennel called Whitworth, has produced Ameri can bred champions over a long period of time. Few imported dogs have been needed to keep up quali ty, although many of their- home bred bitches were mated to im ported studs, and the Whitworth line now combines Pagan Chieftain blood, Arellian Choo Leen and their last Champion, Peer of Whit worth, goes back on the dam’s side to Orchard TH11. Mrs. Mapes is one of our few good dog artists, and has painted many famous Pekingese. She has been able to capture in color, true likenesses of these great champions, showing correct modern type, thereby per petuating1 them in lasting por traits for all posterity to see.” Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gardner of Tryon are among the latest owners to acquire a Pekingese. Trvon has many dog lovers and The Bulletin hopes to conduct a column from time to time on the actvities of local dogs.
